Hi, I’m Roger.

I work at AstraZeneca as a Senior Enterprise Architect focusing on digital transformation in regulated scientific environments and I am completing a PhD at the University of Portsmouth on barriers to Responsible AI (RAI) adoption in the pharmaceutical sector.

This site is a working space for developing ideas at the intersection of responsible AI, socio-technical governance and long-term public value, with a particular interest in how AI is governed in science, health and other high-stakes domains.

Roger Kirby is a Senior Enterprise Architect at AstraZeneca, where he works on large-scale digital transformation and the practical adoption of emerging technologies in regulated scientific environments. His work focuses on data, digital platforms and organisational systems, with an emphasis on how technology can strengthen scientific workflows, support robust decision-making and build long-term institutional capability.

He is also undertaking a PhD at the University of Portsmouth examining barriers to responsible AI adoption in the pharmaceutical sector. His research explores the socio-technical dynamics that shape AI implementation in practice, including organisational culture, regulatory expectations, governance structures and the real-world trade-offs organisations face when balancing innovation, safety and public trust. This includes questions of direct relevance to policymakers, regulators and standards bodies concerned with the design and oversight of AI in high-risk settings.

Across both his academic and professional work he is interested in how AI can contribute to public value, not just financial efficiency, and in how institutions can develop the long-term governance, skills and confidence required for responsible adoption. He is particularly focused on how today’s decisions about AI will affect future generations and how we can design socio-technical systems that genuinely benefit society.

This site is an independent, non-commercial space for academic reflection and policy-relevant analysis on Responsible AI. It will continue to evolve as research progresses.
